Demirköy City Hall has been making activities about water pollution and environmental preservation since August of 2018, with regards to a Project wit the number BSB139 and name “MARENA -A new approach to getting rid of sea and river wastes”, witch is being put in the place with regards to the first offer call of ENI coopreation beyond borders of the Karadeniz Basin, witch is being governed nationally by the General Directorte of Financial Cooperation and Project Implementation of the EU Presidency.
With regard to this project, 30 children in the form of two groups have been involved in the environment preservation activities within Demirköy district on 27’th and 28’th of August, 2019.
During the events Prof. Dr. Emel GÖNENÇ GÜLER from Trakya University has informed the children on the topics:what is environmental pollution, how can we reduce our waste,dangerous wastes, environmental issues as well as showing the children the natural parts of İğneada Lognoz Forests National Park.
Also, a handbook titled “Being a Responsible Citizen” informing children and adults on the environment, and especially on reducing water pollution with regards to the MARLENA Project has been handed out.
During the events, children have been informed on an environmental platform named Marlena online where they can share information.
Demirköy mayor Recep GÜN has explained the activities regarding the importance of biodiversity within the region, the environment being protected by the city hall regarding the project and increasing the sensitivity of the public, especially the youth, about the environment.
With regards to these activities, he also stated that the efforts to clean the river bed in the center of the district and turn it into a nice recreational area are in progress.The total cost of these efforts are around 144.000 euro.
With regards to the activities the children have attended zero waste/recycling workshops and gathered garbage on Erikli Lake and Karadeniz İğneada Beach.
At the end of the event every child received a gratification and participation document due to the sensitivity they have shown towards nature.
The city halls project that is supported by the EU will end August next year.Within this time, plans have been made for a conferance about waste management and good applications towards participants in september.It is also planned that a workshop in Ukraine themed good applications will be joined with the participation of the representatives of the national park and the Kırklareli Directorate of the Environment and Urbanizm.
