The launch of the campaign started on August 17 with promotional materials to encourage locals to collect and dispose the garbage separately. A truck and 27 containers for separate waste collection were purchased under the MARLENA project: MARLENA – Marine and River Litter Elimination New Approach, BSB 139. MARLENA project is aimed at joining forces against pollution along the Black Sea coast and rivers, protected areas and nature reserves near the Black Sea basin.
The thematic conference "Good Waste Management Practices and Results of Surveys in the Black Sea Region" was held on 21 August; the participants learned about the main pollutant studies and how to reduce pollution in the partner regions.
Many games and surprises were also prepared for the children, residents and guests of Malko Turnovo. For nature lovers, on August 22, was organized a tour to the Springs of Mladezhka River, during which the participants cleaned the attractive hiking trail.
Creative inspiration reigned during the Strandzha workshop and art ateliers at Yuri Gagarin Kindergarten and in the city center, during which were made exquisite souvenirs, cheerful but also educational drawings. Newly purchased truck and containers were among the major models of the young artists who created original interpretations. Knowledge and skills on separate waste collection were demonstrated by children during quizzes, games and atelier “Collect Separate and Recycle for Clean Rivers, Sea and Forests”, and each one received numerous and interesting gifts.
The books "Malko Tаrnovo and Its Outskirts" by Georgi pop Ayanov and the book "Plums for Garbage" were among the most desirable gifts that received the residents of Malko Turnovo which sorted and submitted separate garbage for a book on August 27, 2019.
According to the survey, residents of Malko Tarnovo Municipality are positive and expect that the separate waste collection system will be functional.
Project MARLENA - BSB 139 is funded by the Black Sea Basin Joint Operational Program 2014-2020, co-financed by the European Union through the European Neighborhood Instrument and by participating countries: Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine.
