PRESS RELEASE
More than 50 volunteers participated in 2 eco-actions to clean up the areas around protected area “Mouth of the Izvorska River” and protected area “Chengene Skele”
The eco-actions took place on 13 and 14 September 2019 under the MARLENA project: “Marine and River Litter Elimination New Approach ".
50 volunteers, including more than 10 children, have taken the time to do something good and contribute to the transformation of the protected estuaries of the mouth of the Izvorska River and Chengene Skele near Burgas into cleaner and more beautiful places.
75 sacks with garbage or about 900 kg. were collected only in a matter of hours. Among them are predominant plastics, cans, cigarette ends, fishing nets and accessories, household waste.
Vladimir Dimitrov - the chairman of NGO Green Strandzha, organizer of the eco-actions, said that the regular cleaning actions organized by the association and other organizations are more educational. In order to eliminate pollution, it is essential to prevent discharges into the environment and to limit the consumption of certain disposable goods, mainly plastic. All of this waste either decomposes very slowly or breaks down into microparticles, such as microplastics, but all of them once in nature poison the soil, water and living organisms differently, causing this poison to return and harm humans as well.
More and more thinking people are becoming aware of the seriousness of the problem. Personal example and environmental education among young people are very important for building a responsible society. This is also one of the goals of the MARLENA project - to unite like-minded people to prevent pollution. Promotional and educational materials with messages and good practices from other countries in the Black Sea basin were distributed during the eco actions.
MARLENA Project - BSB 139 is funded by the Black Sea Basin Joint Operational Program 2014-2020, co-financed by the European Union through the European Neighborhood Instrument and by participating countries: Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine.
