Together for a bluer Black Sea


The event is organized by the Ministry of Environment and Water and is attended by representatives of the Black Sea Commission, the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization, state and local authorities, scientists and environmentalists.


This years edition of the conference is under the motto "Together for a bluer Black Sea". Its goal is to support the purposeful and sustainable development of the Black Sea region. What has been done so far within the General Agenda of the Black Sea, as well as other political, economic and environmental formats, is a good basis for upgrading and achieving balanced protection of the Black Sea and economic development of the region.


The forum began with greetings from Ms. Atanaska Nikolova, Deputy Minister of Environment and Water; Mr. Dimitar Nikolov, Mayor of Municipality of Burgas and Mr. Halil Ibrahim Sur, Executive Director of the Permanent Secretariat of the Commission for Protection of the Black Sea from Pollution.


In the first part of the event "Black Sea - care today for a better tomorrow" was held a discussion on the Black Sea - good practices, prospects, challenges with the participation of Ms. Ivelina Vasileva, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Water; Ms. Irina Stavchuk, Commissioner, Commission for the Protection of the Black Sea against Pollution, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine; Prof. Dr. Arch. Veselina Troeva, Executive Director of the National Center for Territorial Development and part-time lecturer at UACG and Ms. Maya Javakishvili, Commissioner, Commission for Protection of the Black Sea from Pollution, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.


The following projects were presented during the second part of the forum:


Presentation of the project  Blueing the Black sea, co-financed by the Global Environment Facility - Mrs. Eolina Milova, World Bank in Bulgaria


Presentation of the Blue Growth project under the Interreg Cross-Border Cooperation Program - IPA Bulgaria - Turkey 2014 - 2020 - Assoc. Prof. Svetlana Jeleva, Vice-Rector of the University "Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov“ and project managerThe event ended with the presentation of the Program "Environmental Protection and Climate Change", funded by the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area 2014-2021 and the announcement of the results of the "Small Grant Scheme for measures to reduce marine litter", Result 2 "System for assessment, monitoring and management of marine waters "of the Program" Environmental Protection and Climate Change ".


The location of Burgas has a geostrategic significance, which determines the development of the city as a regional, national and international center in economic, logistical, cultural and social terms. The presence of wetlands with exceptional biodiversity near the sea contributes to the unique appearance of the city.


Burgas also has a key role in establishing international partnerships with cities from other Black Sea countries and in implementing the European policy for economic development of the region.International Black Sea Day (October 31) marks the anniversary of the signing of the Strategic Action Plan for the Restoration and Conservation of the Black Sea in 1996. The document outlines the framework for co-operation between the Black Sea states on the state and future of the Black Sea and the region.


Taking into account the serious deterioration of the environmental health of the Black Sea, the six countries - Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine - signed in April 1992 in Bucharest the Convention on the Protection of the Black Sea against Pollution (Bucharest Convention). diplomatic platform for joint action.
